First we had The Joker. Then, the announcement of the fashion-forward Cruella, hitting Disney+ this Friday. And, now, we get word that Timothée Chalamet is starring in an upcoming origin story film about none other than Willy Wonka.

Wonka might not be an official "villain," but, let's face it: dude casually disposes of children in chocolate pipes, and, oh yeah, is basically a literal slavedriver, so we can count him as a baddie. But something happens when we give these characters a platform in the form of their own origin story film: they get boring.

There's a mystique around characters like the Joker — they are agents for chaos, and not knowing why actually makes them scarier. This is precisely what made The Dark Knight so very good, and all the Star Wars prequels so very bad. So, while we understand why Hollywood is attracted to familiar IP in an era strewn with so much content, these stories only undermine the IP further.

What turned Willy Wonka the purple-hued, overly paranoid chocolate fanatic that he is? Does it matter? And is it even possible to ground such a fantastical character to reality? It seemed hard enough to make a puppy-killing fashionista relatable; how can anyone achieve the same with a man who wants us to lick wallpaper?
