Will Bughead Get Back Together? ‘Riverdale’ Showrunner Teases Their Future

Things that I expect from Riverdale include serial killer dads, bear attacks, and drugs named after candy. What I don't expect? A breakup so quietly devastating, it nearly sends you into an existential crisis. So was the case with Betty and Jughead's Season 5 split. In "Graduation," Betty finally confesses to Jughead that she kissed his best friend Archie, but instead of Jughead ending their relationship with a dramatic blowup, he basically shrugs it off — allowing room for their romance to die in a much sadder way.

Jughead didn't need to dump Betty dramatically: He knew that their differing life circumstances would tear them apart all the same. Still, that doesn't mean Jughead — now seven years older thanks to the show's time jump — is totally over what happened between him and Betty. As Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, teases to The Dipp, we can expect the aftermath of this breakup to reveal itself over time.

"When we started talking about Betty and Jughead, we did feel that when Cheryl and Toni broke up, and when Veronica and Archie broke up, they talked about it," he explains to The Dipp. "When Betty and Jughead broke up, in the 'Graduation' episode, they didn't. Jughead says 'we went our separate ways and drifted off.'"

For that reason, Aguirre-Sacasa teases, "the estrangement between Betty and Jughead would be greater than the estrangement between Veronica and Archie, and Cheryl and Toni."
