Please Relive The 'Punky Brewster' Stuck In The Fridge Episode With Me

Welcome to Retro Recaps, where we revisit your favorite old shows and give them the modern recap treatment they always deserved. Last week, we dove into Kell On Earth. Today, it's Punky Brewster! Caution: snark ahead.

Ok, this is certainly going to date me as a Geriatric Millennial/Xenial/Embryonic Gen Xer, but here are the things that terrified me the most when I was a child: people putting razor blades in Halloween candy, the Disney Bette Davis (and Kyle Richards) vehicle Watcher in the Woods, and the episode of Punky Brewster where her bestie Cherie got stuck in a refrigerator playing hide and seek and almost died. I’m not talking about it scaring me. I am talking about it scarring me, with two (2!) Rs. I seriously could not look at a refrigerator for weeks after watching this episode and even now when I see a refrigerator on the side of the road all I can think about is Punky and how her two-toned Converse All-Stars saved a generation of children from suffocating in abandoned refrigerators.

The odd thing is, as often as I think about it, this is the only thing that I can remember about a show that I watched not only every Sunday night at 7:30 but also in the after-school reruns for years. There was even an animated cartoon about the adorable orphan and her friends. No memory of any of that, but show me a Sub Zero and the first thing I’ll think is, better take off that door if you ever throw it away.
