4 'Lupin' Stories That Could Inspire Part 3

Warning: I'm about to spoil so much about Lupin Part 2. You've been warned. After a daring escape that included a stealing a getaway boat to cross the Seine, Assane is free at the end of Lupin Part 2. But due to the circumstances surrounding his latest caper, he might be forced to leave Paris behind for a bit. This is heartbreaking news for his son Raoul and true love Claire, but it could be good news for the show, because now Assane is free to take inspiration from some deeper cut Lupin stories in Part 3 of the series.

Lupin is an unusual sort of adaptation. It's not actually based on the Arsène Lupin novels and short stories by acclaimed French author Maurice Leblanc. Instead, the main character, Assane, is a fan of the gentleman thief, and often emulates the fictional character as he seeks to bring justice to corrupt rich people like the loathsome Hubert Pellegrini, who framed Assane's father for his own misdeeds, leading to his dad's suicide.

Still, even though it's not a literal adaptation, Part 1 took inspiration from Arsène Lupin: Gentleman Burglar, which includes the short story "The Queen's Necklace," in which the thief steals Marie Antoinette's necklace. Fittingly enough, the tale is Lupin's origin story, which made it the perfect choice for Assane's opening act.

But now that he's exposed Pellegrini's crimes, it's time for Assane to delve deeper into the Lupin back catalog for his next adventure. Luckily for him, there are 17 novels and 39 novellas featuring the gentleman thief for him to choose from, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he draws inspiration from one of these four stories when the show returns for Part 3.
