Deb Is Officially Back In 'Dexter: New Blood' & She's Not The Only One

Out of all the supporting characters that appeared in Dexter's 8-season run, there's really only one person I want to see in Showtime's new revival, and that's Deb fucking Morgan. After multiple reports of her involvement, Deb's return in Dexter: New Blood was finally confirmed this week, and it looks like she's going to be with Dexter in a whole new way.

A lot has been said about how absurd the Dexter series finale was, particularly Dexter's lumberjack ending, but the finale's greatest sin by far was killing Deb. Now, the revival can't exactly undo that particular plot twist (as much as I would like it to), so instead, it's doing the next best thing: bringing Deb back as a Dexter's Dark Passenger — sort of.

Dexter: New Blood Reveals First Look At Deb's Return

"I don't think of her as a ghost, but more of a link or an echo or an inconvenient truth for Dexter," actor Jennifer Carpenter told reporters at the Dexter Television Critics Association's panel on Tuesday, Aug. 24. So, you can think of her as the new Harry Morgan, only with a conscience. (I can't imagine that any version of Deb would be too enthusiastic about Dexter killing again, even Dexter's.) "Deb represents a corner of Deter's mind that we all have in our own heads that says, 'Well, wait a minute. If you do this, then here are the consequences and then you decide whether or not to do it, whether or not to pursue it,'" showrunner Clyde Phillips said.

The first official footage of Deb in Dexter: New Blood (see above) gives us an idea of what Deb the Dark Passenger will look like. In a short moment, you see Deb standing next to Dexter in front of a fire, watching something burn. (It doesn't look like a dead body, but, this is Dexter. Nothing is off the table.) While she doesn't seem super angry about the situation, she also doesn't look too horrified. I'm guessing this new Deb will land somewhere between supporting Dexter's killer instincts and acting as a reminder of what being a serial killer cost him all those years ago (namely the lives of his wife and sister).

More Dexter: New Blood Returns

Deb is the only familiar face in the clips from the revival so far, but she's isn't the only Dexter character coming back from the dead. The Trinity Killer, played by John Lithgow, will also be returning, even though Dexter murdered him in Season 4. Maybe this season, Dexter will not have one Dark Passenger, but two opposing sides fighting in his subconscious — one pro murder (Trinity) and one con (Deb). It's also possible that Trinity and Deb will both be manifestations of Dexter's intense guilt over what happened to Deb and Rita (who Trinity killed).

And then there's this: the teased appearance of a grown-up Harrison, Dexter's son with Rita. Showtime posted a photo on Twitter of what the network teased was a teenaged Harrison standing next to his serial killer dad. "Harrison, is that you?" read the tweet.

It's possible that Showtime is just messing with us, and this isn't Harrison at all, but some local high school kid who enjoys doing yard work with the friendly Fish and Game guy next door. Or he could be Dexter's imagined version of what Harrison, the son he abandoned in the series finale, would be like today. I truly have no idea, but I'll be watching to find out.

Dexter: New Blood premieres Nov. 7.
